Securing
Peace :
On October 16, 2003 NATO will hold a conference on Securing Peace: NATO’s Role in Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution. This conference, under the patronage of Lord Robertson, the Secretary General of NATO, is organized by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces. The conference will take place at the Holiday Inn in Brussels. Lord Roberston will deliver the keynote address on Securing the Peace: NATO’s Vision. Other prominent speakers will include Carl Bildt, the former Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to the Balkans and former High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Gareth Evans, President of the International Crisis Group and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, and Boris Tadic, the Minister of Defence of Serbia and Montenegro. While NATO is engaging in new missions such as ISAF in Afghanistan, the conference will come at an appropriate time to look at the links between the different NATO-led missions as well as the political and military lessons learned from NATO’s engagement in the Balkans. The discussions will focus on NATO’s role in crisis management and conflict resolution, especially in view of the responsibilities that may lie ahead for the Alliance in other parts of the world in the future.
