by NATO Secretary General,
I was delighted to hear the result of Slovenia's referendum and to see that the people of Slovenia have voted to join NATO. NATO's success as a defence alliance for over fifty years has been founded on the democratic support and commitment of its member states.
I welcome the vote of confidence Slovenians have given NATO, and also
their willingness to accept the obligations of membership. I also congratulate
the Government of Slovenia and all those who so successfully campaigned
for NATO membership. Much work remains to be done to prepare for membership,
but for now I greatly look forward to Slovenia joining the NATO team,
and to the ceremony at NATO headquarters later this week when Slovenia
and the other invited nations will be with us for the signing of the accession
protocols to join NATO.
News and information will routinely be posted on the NATO website.
