Statement by the Secretary General of NATO

The Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson, today expressed his outrage and condemned in the strongest terms the hostage taking in Russia.

"Today we are witnessing another act of senseless violence directed at innocent civilians by a group of terrorists. Violence will never advance any goals. The action of terrorists undermines the very objectives that they claim they are pursuing. Guns and bombs and the killing of innocent civilians will never produce justice. I appeal to the terrorists to lay down their weapons, release the hostages and surrender."

The Secretary General added "NATO nations are determined in their resolution to fight terrorists and we express our solidarity with Russia and offer our sympathy to the families of the hostages."
