2002 PBOS Shipping Day with Partners

The NATO Planning Board for Ocean Shipping (PBOS) will conduct its first PBOS Shipping Day with Partnership for Peace (PfP) Nations on 25-26 April 2002 at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The main aims of the 2002 PBOS Shipping Day with Partners are to familiarize and share information about NATO and the work of PBOS with representatives from the National shipping ministries, National Military Authorities and commercial shipping industry in Partner Nations. It will allow to exchange views on how their participation in this work can be made more efficient. The opening address will be given by the Assistant Secretary General for Security Investments, Logistics and Civil Emergency Planning, Mr. Juan M. Esparza. The Shipping Day, responding to the new security challenges, will address a broad range of issues including the protection of NATO and Partner nations' civilian maritime assets against acts of terrorism, for which PBOS is a focal advisory point in NATO, as well as the NATO Chartering Clearinghouse concept developed with Partners which facilitates a coordinated approach to the shipping market.
PBOS carries on a very robust cooperation with Partners. PfP Nations representatives participate in PBOS Plenary sessions, PBOS Working Group meetings, seminars and other activities. The PBOS Shipping Day event will be attended by high level maritime administration officials and shipping industry executives from NATO and Partner countries.

The NATO Planning Board for Ocean Shipping is responsible for developing and maintaining plans for civil shipping support to the Alliance in crisis and war. PBOS planning takes into account the international character of merchant shipping and seeks to facilitate access to worldwide shipping. Its planning responsibilities include planning for the provision of shipping resources to support military lift requirements through appropriate shipping crisis management arrangements, and planning for the availability of marine war risks insurance for merchant ships supporting the Alliance.
