NATO-Russia Conference
on the Military Role in Combating Terrorism

1. Information

A NATO-Russia Conference on "The Military Role in Combating Terrorism" will be held on 4 February 2002, at the NATO Defense College in Rome. The conference in Rome will aim to address from both a Russian and an Alliance view point a number of issues, including possible military role in combating terrorism, lessons learned and best practises in the field, ways in which NATO and Russia can best contribute, what capabilities and training are required, what are the appropriate interfaces with the civilian security sector etc. The event will bring together senior civilian and military officials, together with selected academics and practitioners in the field, in order to facilitate an exchange of views on a practical way ahead for Allies and Russia to fight against terrorism.

The Minister of Defence of Italy, H.E. Antonio Martino, will address the participants with introductory remarks.

The keynote addresses at the Conference will be given by the Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson and the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, H.E. Sergei Ivanov.

A more detailed programme of the conference and media opportunities will be provided closer to the date of the event.

The Conference will take place at the NATO Defense College, Via Giorgio Pelosi 1, 00143 Roma-Cecchignola.
