Meeting
of the Permanent Joint Council
at Ambassadorial Level

The NATO-Russia Permanent Joint Council (PJC) at Ambassadorial
level met on Wednesday, 23 May 2001, at NATO Headquarters.
Following a briefing on the meeting of Chiefs of Staff
under the auspices of the PJC held on 16 May 2001, Ambassadors
discussed the situation in the Balkans and exchanged views
on the NATO-Russia cooperation in the international security
presence in Kosovo (KFOR). They discussed developments
in Southern Serbia, Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, noting a substantial
degree of common ground in assessing the situation in
the region.
Ambassadors addressed nuclear weapons issues, inter alia
on NATO proposals on Confidence and Security Building
Measures in the nuclear field.
Ambassadors also reviewed NATO-Russia cooperation in
the framework of EAPC/PfP.
Ambassadors discussed the preparation for the PJC Meeting
at the level of Foreign Ministers scheduled for 29 May
2001 in Budapest.
The next PJC meeting at Ambassadorial level will be held
on 27 June 2001.
