Statement by NATO Spokesman
on 10th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence
on 24 August 2001

Today, Ukraine celebrates the 10th anniversary of its independence. Since 1991, NATO and Ukraine have made great strides in developing a special relationship in a Europe that has overcome the dividing lines of the past. Significant progress has been achieved in the implementation of the NATO-Ukraine Charter on a Distinctive Partnership, signed four years ago in Madrid.

Building on our joint commitments and responsibilities to contribute to security and stability in Europe, in particular in the Balkans, and on Ukraine’s active participation in the Partnership for Peace Programme, the Alliance remains committed to further enhance NATO-Ukraine relations.

NATO will continue to support independent, democratic and market-oriented Ukraine and encourages Ukraine to take the reform process forward, including in the critical field of defence reform.

Commemorating this 10th anniversary of Ukrainian’s independence, the Secretary General, Lord Robertson, has addressed a telegram of congratulations to President Leonid Kuchma.
