Anti-Personnel Mines |
- Over the last decade, the international community has become increasingly
active to counter the humanitarian difficulties caused by anti-personnel
mines. NATO nations have demonstrated their commitment to tackle this
scourge.
- In December 1998, the Protocol on Prohibitions or Restrictions on
the Use of Mines, Booby Traps and Other Devices, as amended on 3 May
1996, entered into force. This is Protocol II annexed to the 1980 Convention
on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons.
- The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production,
and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction was signed
in Ottawa on 3 December 1997. It came into force on 1 March 1999 and
has been ratified by over 100 States.
