Statement by

Lord Robertson, NATO Secretary General, on Acting President Putin's interview with the BBC

I warmly welcome the positive spirit shown by Acting President Putin during his interview on BBC television on Sunday.

NATO recognises the need for partnership between the Alliance and Russia, and will work hard to build on our existing links. That makes for an already challenging task. At present Russian membership of NATO is not on the agenda.

The NATO/Russia relationship, based on the Founding Act has proved durable and strong enough to overcome periods of disagreement. Acting President Putin's comments underline the renewal of our partnership, as did my recent visit to Moscow.
