Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers
Toronto, Canada - 21-22 September 1999

Media Advisory

  1. Information
  2. Defence Ministers of NATO will hold an informal meeting in Toronto, Canada, on 21-22 September 1999 under the chairmanship of NATO Secretary General, Dr. Javier Solana. The Canadian Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Art Eggleton, will host the meeting. A Media Centre will be located in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) on the 800 level.

  3. Accreditation and security check
  4. European based media representatives who wish to cover the meeting should complete the "request for accreditation" form (.PDF/11Kb) and send it no later than 09 September to the NATO Press and Media Services whose address, telephone and fax numbers are found at the end of this advisory. Media representatives based in North America should return their application to the Director General Public Affairs (DGPA) of the Department of National Defence (DND), Canada, at the address found at the end of this advisory. Press passes will be available from 10:00 hours on Sunday, 19 September, on the presentation of an ID card or passport and a press card (or letter of accreditation from a recognized media agency). An ID card or passport must be shown at any time upon request of security personnel.

    All media representatives accredited to the meeting are advised that security personnel will examine and may test equipment and personal effects carried onto the site. To avoid delays, media representatives must arrive early to be able to clear the security checks. Television, wire services and radio networks that have bulky equipment are particularly urged to move most of it as early as possible into the Media area.

  5. Media Centre
  6. The Media Centre staffed by NATO and DND will be established on the 800 level of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) (South Building off Bremner Ave.).

    Monday, 20 September 09:00 - 24:00
    Tuesday, 21 September 06:00 - 24:00
    Wednesday, 22 September 06:00 - until requirement ceases

    The Media Centre will be equipped with adequate workspace, communications and transmission facilities. The telephones will be credit card or calling card activated. Calling cards will be sold in the Media Centre. Television offices will be made available upon request to the Media Liaison Office of DND (see number below).

  7. News Conferences and press briefings
  8. All news conferences and press briefings will take place on the 800 level of the MTCC. A TV interview room and one radio studio will be installed on the 800 level and television and radio journalists will find adequate transmission facilities.

  9. Transport - parking - visas
  10. A bus shuttle service to and from Pearson International Airport (Toronto) to the Holiday Inn on King (downtown) will operate on the 20, 22, 23 September. A NATO information desk will be set up in each of the three terminals where bus schedules will be available.

    Private parking will be available adjacent to the MTCC.

    Please check with the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate regarding visa requirements.

  11. Accomodation
  12. Reservations at any of the hotels listed should be made as soon as possible. 125 rooms have been reserved for media at the Holiday Inn on King.

  13. Payments
  14. Visa, Master Card, Amex and Diners credit cards are accepted by the hotel for payment. Currency exchange is available at the hotel or throughout the downtown area.

  15. Programme
  16. A detailed programme will be available upon accreditation.

    The final programme will be provided on accreditation at the Media Centre. Due to limited space, some media events can only be covered on a pool basis. Requests for pool cards should be made when checking in at the accreditation desk. The host broadcaster will cover the main public events and feed them back to the Media Centre where the coverage will be shown on video monitors.
