Today Ukrainian Foreign Minister Hennadiy Udovenko and
Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council Volodymyr
Horbulin visited NATO Headquarters.
Secretary General Solana
held a meeting with them in which they consulted on the
development of the NATO-Ukraine relationship. Both sides were
satisfied with progress achieved in the implementation of the
activities envisaged in the Joint Press Statement which was
published in September 1995. They formally opened negotiations
toward the formalization of the NATO-Ukraine relationship, which
they are determined to conclude by the time of the NATO Summit in
July. They also discussed the way forward toward the opening in
the near future of a NATO Information and Documentation Centre in
Kyiv and agreed a visit of Secretary General Solana on that
occasion.
Foreign Minister Udovenko and Secretary of the National
Security and Defence Council Horbulin also met with the NATO
Permanent Representatives for a "16+1" meeting which provided the
opportunity for a broad exchange of views on topics of common
interest related to European security.
