NATO/CCMS Meetings on Evaluation of Demonstrated and Emerging Technologies for the Treatment of Contaminated Land and Groundwater

The fifth meeting of the NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society Pilot Study on "Evaluation of Demonstrated and Emerging Technologies for the Treatment of Contaminated Land and Groundwater" led by the United States, Germany and the Netherlands, will be held in Berlin from September 4-6. Organised within the framework of the NATO North Atlantic Cooperation Council, this study focuses on technical solutions to the problems caused by past discharges of hazardous waste which result in contamination of land and groundwater.

Participants will discuss new technologies being developed, demonstrated and evaluated in the field. These include biological, chemical/physical, and thermal technologies. A field trip to three contaminated sites in the Berlin area will provide the pilot study members the opportunity to observe innovative technology first hand.

Cooperation Partner experts from Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia, Slovenia and Sweden will participate together with NATO-member experts from Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, UK and USA. Switzerland will also be represented.

Following the meeting in Berlin, many participants will attend the Third International Symposium and Exhibition on "Environmental Contamination in Central and Eastern Europe" to be held in Warsaw from September 10-13. This symposium, which is co-sponsored by NATO Science Committee and CCMS, will focus on evaluating solutions to problems related to hazardous waste and toxic substances, including radioactive and mixed waste in the context of contaminated air, water and land in Central and Eastern European countries. Eight speakers from CCMS pilot studies addressing contaminated land will present results of projects undertaken within their pilot study. This session will be chaired by pilot study director Dr. Stephen C. James. Key speakers will come from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Slovenia and the United States.
