NATO Advanced Research Workshop on
"Recycling, Remediation, and Restoration Strategies
For Contaminated Civilian and
Military Sites
in the Arctic Far North"
Scientists and experts from several NATO and Cooperation Partner countries will attend
a NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Pasvkidalen, Norway, 40 kilometres south of
Kirkenes, from 24 to 28 June, 1996 to discuss contamination in the Arctic Far North.
The experts will develop a set of recommendations for concrete cooperative activities in
the Archangelsk-Murmansk region which would help to resolve the nuclear and chemical
contamination brought about by military and civilian activities there and serve as general
guidelines for similar projects elsewhere.
Experts will address many issues surrounding the existing contamination, including the
prioritization of waste reduction activities; the storage, treatment, and disposal of spent
nuclear fuel and nuclear waste; the transportation of nuclear waste; non-radioactive solid
wastes; and risk and impact assessments.
Co-directors of the workshop are Dr. Elizabeth J. Kirk of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science in Washington, DC, and Dr. Vitaly Lystsov of the Russian
Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" in Moscow.
For further information, please contact Dr. Kirk (fax: (1-202) 289 4958) or
Dr. L. Veiga da Cunha, Director of the Priority Area on Environmental Security, NATO
(fax: (32-2) 707 42 32).
