Situation in Sarajevo
NATO and the IFOR commanders are deeply concerned by
the recent increase in arson, bealings and other criminal
actions in the suburbs of Sarajevo being transferred to
Federation control under the terms of the Peace Agreement.
IFOR has been working closely with the High
Representative, the International Police Task Force and
local leaders to prevent further such occurences and to
restore calm and order.
Today, pursuant to a discussion with the Secretary
General, SACEUR directed Admiral Smith to continue full
support of the IPTF and Federation Police in their efforts
to provide effective law enforcement in affected areas
around Sarajevo. Admiral Smith has assured SACEUR that
measures have been put in place, to include substantially
increasing the IFOR presence in those areas, and providing
security for fire brigades.
We condemn those who have encouraged the mass exodus of
Serbian people from Sarajevo and call on all parties to
respect human rights and to allow civilians to remain in
or return to their homes.
