         NATO WORKSHOP ON SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY IN
                THE CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS


A NATO Advanced Research Workshop examining the problems
and prospects for the upgrading of science and technology
in the Central Asian Republics of the former Soviet Union
is being held from 11-14 October, 1994 in Ankara, Turkey.

This workshop aims to:

-    survey the infrastructure of Central Asian Republics
     as to their research and development capabilities;

-    identify high priority issues to formulate
     strategies for the renovation and upgrading of
     scientific and technological infrastructure and
     research facilities as well as the restructuring of
     universities;

-    initiate activities for the downsizing of
     megacapacity establishments as well as their
     restructuring;

-    determine the potential sources of technological
     assistance from developed countries.

About 50 scientists and experts from Azerbaijan, Belgium,
Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, UK, USA and
Uzbekistan will discuss in various sessions problems,
prospects and proposals related to these republics.
