                     EXERCISE COOPERATIVE SPIRIT


The first joint training exercise to be conducted on
Allied territory under Partnership for Peace will be held
in the Netherlands from 21 to 28 October at the Harskamp
military training area of the Royal Netherlands Army in
the Veluwe, central Netherlands.

The exercise will involve platoon and company size units
training in peace-keeping operations.  Its purpose is to
share peace-keeping experience, enhance individual
peace-keeping skills, develop a common understanding of
operational procedures and improve the abilities of NATO
and Partner military forces to work together in
international peace-keeping operations.

COOPERATIVE SPIRIT will be held under the supervision of
SACEUR and will be under the command of Major General J.C.
Kosters, Commander of the 4th Division, Royal Netherlands
Army.  It will involve about 1000 military personnel from
12 countries: Canada, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany,
Lithuania,Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, United
Kingdom, United States and the host nation, the
Netherlands.  Many other Allied and Partner nations will
send observers to the exercise.  It is expected that the
exercise closing ceremonies on 27 October will be attended
by senior political and military officials from a number
of the participating countries.
