PRESS GUIDELINE FOR THE INFORMAL MEETING OF
   DEFENCE MINISTERS, SEVILLE 29TH - 30TH SEPTEMBER, 1994

The Defence Ministers and representatives of
the 16 nations of the Alliance met in Seville, Spain on
29th and 30th September to discuss informally a range of
subjects of mutual interest and concern.

At this first meeting after the death of
Manfred Woerner, Ministers paid tribute to the historic
contribution which their former colleague and Secretary
General had made to the strengthening of the Alliance and
its adaptation to the new security environment.

Ministers exchanged views on four subjects in
particular: the situation in the former Yugoslavia;
peacekeaping and the concept of combined joint task
forces; NATO's defence cooperation with Central and
Eastern Europe, including Partnership for peace; and
security in the Mediterranean.

          The Ministers' informal and wide-ranging
discussions revealed a substantial concensus on these
topics and the more general matter of the Alliance's
adaptation to the new demands of European stability and
security. Ministers expressed their appreciation to their
Spanish colleague, Julian Garcia Vargas, for hosting the
meeting.
