                     MEETING OF NATO DEFENCE MINISTERS
                     TRAVEMUNDE 20TH-21ST OCTOBER 1993

NATO Defence Ministers met in Travemunde, Germany on 20th and 21st
October 1993 to discuss informally a range of subjects of mutual
interest and concern.

Ministers focussed in particular on five subjects: the situation in
the former Yugoslavia; wider perspectives of NATO's role in
peacekeeping; transatlantic solidarity and the development of a
European Security and Defence Indentity; the future of defence-
related cooperation with countries of Central and Eastern Europe;
and the danger of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and
ballistic missiles.

An open-ended and wide-ranging discussion showed a broad degree of
consensus on these issues of fundamental importance to the Alliance
in the new and still evolving security environment. This was the first
meeting of its kind, and Ministers expressed their gratitude to their
German colleague, Volker Ruhe, for hosting it.
