       APPOINTMENT OF GENERAL GEORGE A. JOULWAN TO SUCCEED GENERAL JOHN
       M. SHALIKASHVILI AS SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER, EUROPE

The NATO Defence Planning Committee has today appointed General George
A. Joulwan to succeed General John M. Shalikashvili as Supreme Allied
Commander, Europe.

In releasing General Shalikashvili from his assignment as Supreme
Allied Commander, Europe, the Committee has expressed to him in the
name of the Governments represented in the Committee, deep and lasting
gratitude for his distinguished service.

The Committee had requested that the President of the United States of
America nominate an officer of the United States Armed Forces for
appointment by the Committee as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, to
succeed General Shalikasvili. In response to this request, President
Clinton has informed the Committee of his nomination of General George
A. Joulwan for consideration by the Committee as successor to General
Shalikashvili. General Joulwan is now serving as Commander in Chief,
United States Southern Command.

The Defence Planning Committee today has adopted a resolution
appointing General George A. Joulwan Supreme Allied Commander, Europe,
as successor to General Shalikashvili with the same powers and
functions.

In addition to the NATO position, General Joulwan will be assigned as
Commander in Chief, United States European Command.

General Joulwan will take up his appointment as soon as possible.

NOMINATION DU GENERAL GEORGE A. JOULWAN AU POSTE DE COMMANDANT SUPREME
DES FORCES ALLIEES EN EUROPE, EN REMPLACEMENT DU GENERAL JOHN M.
SHALIKASHVILI

Le Comite des plans de defense de l'OTAN a nomme aujourd'hui le General
George A. Joulwan au poste de Commandant supreme des forces alliees en
Europe, pour remplacer le General John M. Shalikashvili.

En liberant le General Shalikashvili de ses fonctions de Commandant
supreme des forces alliees en Europe, le Comite lui a fait part, au nom
des gouvernements qu'il represente, de sa profonde et durable gratitude
pour les eminents services qu'il a rendus.

Le Comite avait demande au President des Etats-Unis de designer un
officier des forces armees americaines qu'il pourrait nommer au poste
de Commandant supreme des forces alliees en Europe, pour remplacer le
General John M. Shalikashvili. En reponse a cette demande, le President
Clinton a informe le Comite de ce qu'il proposait le General George A.
Joulwan pour succeder au General Shalikashvili. Le General Joulwan est
actuellement le Commandant en chef du Commandement Sud des Etats-Unis.

Le Comite des plans de defense a adopte aujourd'hui une resolution par
laquelle il nomme le General George A. Joulwan Commandant supreme des
forces alliees en Europe, pour remplacer le General John M.
Shalikashvili, avec les memes pouvoirs et fonctions.

En plus de ses fonctions a l'OTAN, le General Joulwan sera nomme
Commandant en chef des forces americaines en Europe. Le General Joulwan
prendra son commandement dans les meilleurs delais.
