Chapter 17: Standardization and Interoperability

Aim

1706. The aim of NATO Standardization is to enhance the Alliance's operational effectiveness and to improve the efficiency in the use of available resources. Multinationality is a key factor in NATO's force structure. To achieve interoperable multinational forces, commonality of doctrine and procedures, interoperability of communications and informations systems (CIS) and of relevant Alliance equipment, and interchangeability of combat supplies are required. Improvements in standardization should be pursued as an integral part of defence planning.

1707. Industry's capability to satisfy military requirements belongs entirely to the economic system of the member nations; consequently, the achievement of NATO Standardization is highly dependent on the political will of the Alliance nations to commit themselves to the necessary efforts.
