The NATO Nuclear Planning Group, composed of the Ministers
of Defence of seven NATO countries, adjourned today after
a two-day conference in London.
Attending the meeting were Mr. Paul-Willem Segers,
Belgium, Mr. Erik Ninn-Hansen, Denmark, Mr. Gerhard
Schroeder, Fed. Rep. of Germany, Mr. Luigi Gui, ltaly, Mr.
Ahmet Topaloglu, Turkey, Mr. Denis Healey, United Kingdom,
and Mr. Melvin R. Laird, United States.
Mr. Manlio Brosio, Secretary-General of NATO, was
chairman.
The Ministers continued their review of nuclear defence
planning. They discussed in particular the subject of
further guidelines for the NATO military authorities in
respect of the tactical use of nuclear weapons in the
defence of the North Atlantic Treaty area.
Welcoming the progress that has been made, they gave
instructions for the continuation of work in this field,
and decided to resume their discussion at their next
meeting.
The Ministers considered strategic aspects of NATO's
nuclear defence, and further arrangements for consultation
within the Alliance on the possible use of nuclear
weapons.
The Ministers agreed to hold the Group's next meeting in
November 1969 in the United States.
