General Information
Maastricht is unique among the cities of the Netherlands. The oldest of all Dutch cities, it is also, because of its location, the most European. Its rich military past shows, even today. You can recognise the old city by its walls and remaining fortifications. The only remaining barracks in the city are now in use by AFCENT.
Maastricht is renowned for its hospitality, with its many sidewalks cafs and restaurants. Maastricht's skyline is dominated by historic landmarks. These include the St. Servatius Bridge (c. 1298) over the Maas; the "Dinghuis", or former courthouse (c. 1475); and the town hall (1664). The cathedral, dedicated to St-Servatius, was founded in the 6th century. It is the oldest church in the Netherlands. There are many other medieval churches, as well as fine houses in regional Renaissance and French styles Maastricht, a cultural centre, has a university, art academies and museums of at, antiquities and natural history. Its international character is not a matter of words alone. In most shops and restaurants you can pay with Belgium and German currencies, as well as, of course, the Dutch Florin. We have included a Map of Maastricht, for your information.
