1981 – Second and later First Secretary at the Turkish Delegation to the North Atlantic Council in Brussels

1984 – First Secretary at the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi

1986 – Special Advisor to the Undersecretary of the MFA

1989 – Political Counselor at the Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C.

1993 – Head of NATO Military Affairs Department, MFA

1995 – Minister-Counselor & the DCM of the Turkish Embassy in Athens

1999 – Head of NATO and WEU Department, MFA

2000 – Special Advisor to the Undersecretary of the MFA (briefly), then Chief of Cabinet and Principal Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of the Republic

2003 – Ambassador of Turkey to the Kingdom of the Netherlands

Married to Arzu Etensel Ildem with two children Defne and Selim.
