Lieutenant General Johannes Kert

Johannes Kert was born on December 3, 1959 in Petseri, Estonia.

In 1977 he completed High School at Võru’s Secondary School and continued his studies at Tartu University majoring in Physical Culture. In university he completed the Soviet Army’s obligatory military officer’s course. Upon graduating in 1981 he coached Greco-Roman wrestling for Estonian sporting organizations and worked as a professional photographer.

Johannes Kert was called to service in the Soviet Army from 1983 to 1985.

In 1990, Johannes Kert Sensed possible Estonian independence and began actively working to re-establish the Defense League (Kaitseliit). The Estonian Defense League was officially activates on February 17, 1990.

In 1991 he served as the Chief of Staff of Defense League Tartu Regional Unit (Malev). Later that year he was promoted to the Commander of Defense League Tartu Regional Unit.

In November he was appointed as the Defense League’s Operational Commander.
In 1992 Johannes Kert activated and commanded the Kuperjanov Single Infantry Battalion. With the Kuperjanov Battalion now operational, he was assigned to continue structuring the Defense League and promoted to the Commander of the Defense League on December 28, 1992.

In January 23, 1996, he was appointed to Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, where he served till June 2000.

He has completed several supplementary military training courses abroad. The most recent being the Defense Planning Course at the George C. Marshall Center, Garmish, Germany and War College in Pennsylvania, USA.

He was appointed as the Commander of Land Forces in 2001.
2002 he was appointed as the Military Representative of the Estonian Delegation to NATO.
