Chris Donnelly
1989 - 2003
Chris Donnelly is Special Adviser for Central and Eastern European Affairs
to the Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson, having served three
former Secretary Generals in the same function.
Prior to his joining NATO in 1989 he was for 20 years at the Royal Military
Academy, Sandhurst, initially as an instructor in Russian and Soviet studies,
and from 1973 as a member of the Soviet Studies Research Centre, which
body he headed from 1979 until 1989.
Born in Rochdale, Lancashire, UK, Chris Donnelly graduated from Manchester
University in 1969. He has published numerous articles on Russian and
Soviet military and political issues. He is the author of Red Banner -
the Soviet Military System in Peace and War [1988]. From 1970 to 1993
he served as a reserve officer in the British Territorial Army.
His current major interest is in the reform of defence and security establishments
in Central and Eastern European countries following the end of the Cold
War, and the development of collaboration between Eastern and Western
defence establishments.
