Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee

VADM Fages is the Deputy Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. This Committee advises the North Atlantic Council on military matters affecting the Alliance. He assumed his duties in May 2001.
VADM Fages' previous Flag Officer billets have included assignments as Director of Undersea Warfare for the United States Navy; Commander Submarine Group Two, and Commander, Northeast Region, commanding Atlantic Fleet fast attack submarines, and Naval installations in the Northeastern United States; and Director of International Negotiations on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with a portfolio that included nuclear and conventional arms control issues, weapons technology control, and policy matters involving the former Soviet Union.
VADM Fages served as Chief of Staff, THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battle Group prior to assuming Flag rank. This tour was highlighted by deployment in the European and Central Command theaters, service as Chief of Staff for Joint Task Force 120 and as Battle Group Commander for Exercise AGILE PROVIDER.
VADM Fages has commanded USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735 GOLD), a Trident II strategic submarine and USS NARWHAL (SSN 671), a nuclear fast attack submarine. Prior to submarine command he served in a wide range of submarines billets.
Earlier in his career, VADM Fages commanded the Nuclear Field 'A' School which provides apprentice training to all enlisted personnel entering the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. He has also served as a member of the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board and on the Staffs of Submarine Squadrons Four and Sixteen.
VADM Fages is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. He was commissioned through the NROTC program, graduating from Auburn University with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering. He earned a Master of Arts in Political Science in 1990, graduating with highest honors from the University of Central Florida.
VADM Fages' personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal,
Legion of Merit with three Gold Stars, Meritorious Service Medal with
two gold stars, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, and various unit
Commendations and service ribbons.
