General Jean-Louis Georgelin

General Jean-Louis Georgelin was born on 30 August 1948. Upon graduation from the Military Academy of Saint Cyr, he chose to serve as an Infantry officer.

Throughout his career, he assumed both Command and Staff responsibilities :

1967 – 1969 Officer Cadet, Military Academy of Saint Cyr.

1969 – 1970 Infantry School, Montpellier, France.

1970 – 1973 First Lieutenant, Platoon Leader, 9 th Airborne Inf Battalion,

Toulouse, France.

1973 – 1976 Instructor in the Infantry School, Montpellier, France.

1976 – 1979 Captain, Company Cdr, 153 rd Infantry Battalion, Mutzig, France.

1979 – 1980 Department of Military Intelligence, Paris.

1980 – 1982 Army Staff, AdC to the Chief of Staff of the Army, Paris.

1982 – 1983 Promoted Major and student at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

1983 – 1985 Student in the Staff College, Paris.

1985 – 1988 Promoted to Lt Colonel, Officer Cadets Battalion Commander, Military Academy of Saint Cyr.

1988 – 1991 Promoted to Colonel, Chief of the Financial Planning Office,

Army Staff, Paris.

1991 – 1993 CO of the 153 rd Infantry Battalion, Mutzig, France.

1993 – 1994 Student in the Center for Advanced Military Studies, Paris.

1994 – 1997 Army Assistant to the Chief of the Military Cabinet of the Prime Minister, Paris.

1997 – 1998 Promoted to Brigadier General, 2IC of the 11 th Airborne Division, then Chief J5, SFOR, former Yugoslavia.

1998 – 2001 Chief of the Plans and Programmes Division, Joint Defense HQ, Paris. Promoted to Major General in August 2000.

2001 – 2002 DCOS Plans, Joint Defense HQ, Paris. Promoted to Lieutenant General on 1 October 2002.

2002 – 2006 Chief of the Military Staff of the President of the Republic. Promoted to General on 3 October 2003.

4 October 2006 Chief of the Defence Staff.

General Georgelin’s decorations include the Legion of Honor and the National Order of Merit (both with the rank of Officer).
