Meeting of the NATO-Georgia Council (NGC) Left to right: NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen with Bachana Akhalaia (Minister of Defence, Georgia)

Minister Akhalaia, Ministers, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this meeting of NATO-Georgia Commission Defence Ministers.

Today, we will discuss the current situation in Georgia, and our defence and security cooperation – including Georgia’s contribution to ISAF.

On that point, I would like to express our gratitude, Mr. Minister, for Georgia’s contribution to our efforts in Afghanistan.  It is very significant, for a small country.

We will also look at how we can further support Georgia’s reform efforts.  NATO’s decision to open the Door to Georgiastill stands – but a lot of reform still needs to be done.  The Alliancewill continue to support and guide those reforms, in particular democratic civilian oversight of defence and security force.

Let me now give the floor to you, Minister, for your introductory remarks.
