Missile defence
At the Lisbon Summit, NATO’s leaders decided to develop a missile defence capability to protect the Alliance’s populations and territories in Europe against ballistic missile attacks.
With the growing threat of the proliferation of ballistic missile technology and weapons of mass destruction, Allied Heads of State and Government said that they see missile defence as a core element of NATO’s collective defence task.
