Appointment of Secretary General designate

This afternoon, the North Atlantic Council appointed Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, currently Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Secretary General of NATO and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council, in succession to Lord Robertson of Port Ellen. Mr. de Hoop Scheffer will assume his functions as Secretary General on 1 January 2004.
