NATO Military Committee welcomes new Deputy Chairman, Lieutenant General Scott Kindsvater

On 30 September 2019, US Air Force Lieutenant General Scott Kindsvater took over the position of Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee today from outgoing Deputy Chairman Lieutenant General Steven Shepro. Lieutenant General Kindsvater is the former Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations and Intelligence, at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.

Lieutenant General Kindsvater was commissioned in 1989 after graduating from the US Air Force Academy. He is an F-15E weapons school graduate and instructor. General Kindsvater is a command pilot with more than 3,600 hours of flight time, to include more than 600 combat hours over Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lieutenant General Kindsvater has held various staff assignments to include 9th Air Force, US Air Forces Central Command, Headquarters US Air Force, Office of the Defense Representative-Pakistan, the Joint Staff and Military Fellow to US Senator Pat Roberts. He commanded the 336th Fighter Squadron, the 336th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron three times, was the commandant of the USAF Weapons School and has commanded the 93rd Air Ground Operations Wing, the 82nd Training Wing, and an Expeditionary Task Force. He most recently served as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations and Intelligence at SHAPE where he held the responsibility for supervising and directing the SHAPE Comprehensive Crisis Operations Management Centre, J2, J3 and J9.

When asked about his appointment, Lieutenant General Kindsvater said: “It is an honour to have been appointed Deputy Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. NATO is the most successful military alliance in the world. Today, as we face the most challenging and complex security environment since the end of the Cold War, NATO has been adapting to ensure that it remains able to deter and defend from any threat and continue to protect nearly 1 billion people. The world still needs NATO and I look forward to being part of its great legacy”.  

The Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee (DCMC) is a United States Officer and his responsibilities are to assist the Chairman of the Military Committee (CMC) in the execution of his duties and to take over the CMC's duties in his absence. He is also specifically responsible for the co-ordination of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) matters within the International Military Staff (IMS).
