Clearing up an ecological legacy

Pollution from old disused phosphate and iron mines that has lingered in derelict Moroccan, Portuguese and Tunisian mining sites for decades may have finally met its eco-friendly match. Competing to be the best

“Running through thickets in military boots is in an endurance class of its own,” grimaces Falk Grundschok, after seeing his exhausted teams arriving back from the reserves pentathlon orienteering course in Warsaw, Poland, on 7 August. Some eleven NATO nations took part in the NATO-supported CIOR (Interallied Confederate of Reserve Officers) annual pentathlon event. Participants train for months beforehand to be prepared. Unlike a normal pentathlon, this special version consists of specialist military skills such as shooting, land and water obstacle events and land navigation, as well as first aid and the law of armed conflicts as extras. If that’s not enough, for those taking part in this seriously competitive weekend, there can also be light-hearted initiation ceremonies to contend with.

Operation Unified Protector: Faces of the mission

NATO’s ongoing mission in Libya has dominated international headlines for the past several months. However, one does not often see the faces behind Operation Unified Protector; the hundreds of men and women without whom NATO’s mission would not be possible. The following photos therefore showcase the efforts of NATO’s hardworking and courageous Allied Forces who, either by air or sea, regularly save countless lives of innocent civilians and protect them from pro-Ghaddafi forces in order to allow the Libyan people to decide their future.

NATO strikes Libyan state TV satellite facility

A few hours ago, NATO conducted a precision air strike that disabled three ground-based Libyan state TV satellite transmission dishes in Tripoli. The strike, performed by NATO fighter aircraft using state-of-the art precision guided munitions, was conducted in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 1973, with the intent of degrading Qadhafi’s use of satellite television as a means to intimidate the Libyan people and incite acts of violence against them.
