Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits Latvia on the 20th anniversary of its NATO membership

On 27-29 March 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, visited Latvia upon the invitation of the Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš. While in Riga, Admiral Bauer met with the President, Minister of Defence and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, in order to discuss collective deterrence and defence and the implementation of the decisions taken at the Vilnius summit last year. Admiral Bauer also participated in public events to celebrate Latvia’s NATO 20 year-membership.

Delegation from Algerian Military visits NATO to brief the Military Committee on Algeria’s vision for security and stability in the region

On 28 March 2024 a delegation from the General Staff of the Algerian National People’s Army visited NATO HQ to brief the NATO Military Committee on "Algeria’s vision and contribution to the stability of the region." The delegation was led by Major General Belkacem Hasnat, Head of Operations Department and Chairman of the Standing Committee for the Military Cooperation with NATO. General Hasnat was joined by four other delegates, including Algeria’s Military Representative to NATO, Colonel Azzedine Henane.

NATO Military Committee visits Allied Command Transformation in Portugal

From 20 to 22 March 2024, at the invitation of General Philippe Lavigne, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, the NATO Military Committee travelled to Allied Command Transformation’s Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre (JALLC) in Monsanto, Portugal. The NATO Military Representatives also visited the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) Headquarters.

Deep Dive Recap: The High North and the Gender Perspective

On 21 February 2024, the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) Office of the Gender Advisor convened its final Deep Dive session of the regional series, discussing the High North and the Gender Perspective. It focused on the complex intersection of gender and regional security threats, including hybrid attacks. It also discussed the intersection of gender with other marginalised identity markers, as well as categories for gender analysis in preparing for, preventing and responding to security threats in the High North.

“Ukraine does not stand alone”, says Chair of the NATO Military Committee at the Kyiv Security Forum

On 20-21 March 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer was in Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna, Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, and Ukrainian Chief of Defence, General Oleksandr Syrskyi. This is the first NATO military delegation to visit Ukraine since the full-scale invasion. During his visit, Admiral Bauer addressed the Kyiv Security Forum.

NATO Defense College receives the "General Gutiérrez Mellado" Award

On 1 March 2024, the NATO Defense College (NDC), NATO’s leading strategic educational and research organisation, received the prestigious "General Gutiérrez Mellado" Extraordinary Spanish Defence Award for 2024 in recognition of its valuable contributions to the Spanish Armed Forces. The award ceremony was presided over by its Commandant, Lieutenant General Max Nielsen and special guest, Spanish Minister of Defence Ms Margarita Robles Fernández.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits partner Ireland

From 26th to 28th February 2024, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer was in Ireland for an official visit at the invitation of the Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy. During the visit, he also met with the Secretary General of the Department of Defence, Jacqui McCrum, provided an address to members of the Irish Defence Forces and engaged with the Institute for International and European Affairs.

NATO meets with Partners to discuss the dynamics of strategies and implementation of Partnerships

On 28 February 2024, the Cooperative Security Division of the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) hosted its Bi-annual Meeting with Partners. Participants from 29 NATO Partner Nations and the European Union Military Staff discussed strategic partnering, capacity-building, education and training solutions and practical cooperation.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee attends the 53rd NATO Defense College Academic Advisory Board meeting

On 19th and 20th February 2024, the NATO Defense College Academic Advisory Board (AAB) convened its 53rd annual meeting in Rome, Italy. The AAB advises the Commandant on ways in which to improve the academic, research and outreach activities of the College, to enhance links with NATO HQ and Allied Command Transformation, and to ensure that the College’s outreach strategies align with those of the Alliance.
