NATO and United Nations working together to strengthen Jordan’s security and defence capacity against terrorist threats

NATO and the United Nations have launched a partnership to strengthen Jordan’s resilience and capacity to deal with threats posed by terrorist attacks with the use of weapons of mass destruction. On 5 March 2019 - at the UN Headquarters in New York - representatives of NATO and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the joint Project on “Enhancing Capabilities to prepare for and respond to a terrorist attack in Jordan featuring the use of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) weapons.”

NATO Conference discusses the impact of poor governance as a security risk

Representatives from NATO nations and partner countries gathered in Washington DC on Tuesday (5 March) to discuss how to promote better governance, accountability and transparency in the defence and security sector. They were joined by delegates from international organisations, NGOs and the private sector for the three-day “NATO 2019 Building Integrity Conference”, with a focus on the challenges to build capable defence institutions.

Defence education experts review progress in Afghanistan

Experts in defence education gathered from 19 to 21 February, 2019 at NATO Headquarters, Belgium to conduct the annual review of NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) with Afghanistan. Participants took stock of progress achieved, addressed challenges faced and set future objectives for military education and training.

NATO Secretary General praises Bulgaria’s strategic role in the Black Sea region

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised Bulgaria’s commitment to NATO during a visit to Sofia on Friday (1 March 2019). After talks with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the Secretary General thanked Bulgaria for its strong contributions to NATO missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq, and its strategic role in the Black Sea and Western Balkans regions.

Director General of the NATO International Military Staff Discusses Regional Stability with Bosnian Officials

Lieutenant General Jan Broeks, Director General of the NATO International Military Staff visited Bosnia and Herzegovina on 25-26 February 2019. During his visit, Lieutenant General Broeks met with Minister of Defence, Ms Marina Pendeš and Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Senad Mašović. He also took the opportunity to visit the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo.

NATO navies practise anti-submarine tactics during Dynamic Manta

Naval forces from 10 NATO countries came together off the coast of Sicily on Monday (25 February 2019) for Dynamic Manta 2019, one of the alliance’s most challenging anti-submarine warfare exercises. The 10-day event is aimed at testing allied personnel on how to combat submarines from the air, surface and underwater.

The NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller travelled to Budapest on Tuesday (26 February 2019) and met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó, with Minister of Defence Tibor Benkõ and with other high-level government officials. She also delivered a keynote speech at the Ambassadorial Conference of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
