Military Committee (MC)

The Military Committee (MC) is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council, both having been formed only months after the Alliance came into being. It is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group, and gives direction to the two Strategic Commanders.

NATO Chiefs of Defence enhance military plans, capabilities and resources

On 18 September 2020, the Allied Chiefs of Defence gathered virtually for their final Military Committee Conference of 2020. Discussions focused on Operations, missions and activities, Deterrence and Defence of the Euro Atlantic Area Alignment, NATO’s Warfighting Capstone Concept and Russia – Capabilities and Response. The Military Committee’s advice will frame discussions in the North Atlantic Council ahead of this year’s Defence and Foreign Ministerials. Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the Military Committee, led the day’s meeting assisted by NATO’s Strategic Commanders, General Tod Wolters, SACEUR, and General Andre Lanata, SACT.

Military Committee Conference - Chiefs of Defence Session - Media Advisory

The Military Committee, NATO’s highest Military Authority, will hold its final conference of 2020 in Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) format, virtually via secure teleconference on 18 September. Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the Military Committee, will preside over the sessions supported by General Tod Wolters (Supreme Allied Commander Europe, SACEUR) and General André Lanata (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, SACT).

NATO Military Committee Chairman visits Allied Land Command

Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visited NATO’s Allied Land Command in Izmir, Turkey on 9 September 2020. He met with Commander LANDCOM, Lieutenant General Roger L. Cloutier Jr who took office in August of this year. While at the Command, Air Chief Marshal Peach received briefings on LANDCOM’s mission responsibilities and the security situation in neighbouring countries.
