Careers at NATO

“NATO is about communication -- left, right and centre” said a former Secretary General twelve years ago. What was true then still applies today: the Alliance is unique in its ability to bring together people who, despite their various cultural backgrounds, have an interest in sharing information, building bridges, widening their network and sharing experiences. They communicate in several languages, by voice, on paper and by digital and web media.

Such a complex communication environment entails serious logistics divided into four main activities: the linguistic task of translating NATO documents; the simultaneous interpretation of meetings and conferences into English or French; the distribution, storage and publication of digital and printed material and the engagement of outside audiences through media operations and through the web.

My job

Raphael, Deputy Head Translation

As Deputy Head (French Section) of the International Staff Translation Service, I share my time between operations and strategy. On the operational side I ensure that my section delivers translations on time and at the level of quality expected from our diverse customers. The texts cover the full spectrum of NATO activities, which is what makes this job really interesting. To cater for all kinds of emergency I need to ensure that high-calibre translators are available around the clock should the Private Office of the Secretary General require urgent translation.

On the strategic side, my role is to assist the Head of Service in the management of our section. This includes recruitment, training and budget management activities, as well as the selection and the implementation of computer-assisted translation tools.

The highlights of the year for me are the meetings of NATO defence and foreign ministers and summits. Although these periods are synonymous with heavy workload, I am in the privileged position of being informed of all the hot topics discussed by the nations, which I find very motivating.
