Before taking over as Director of the Private Office of the Secretary General, Geoffrey van Leeuwen served as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation for the Netherlands, after having spent several years as National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister.
Geoffrey van Leeuwen has spent a career in Dutch diplomacy, in different positions varying from Dutch Ambassador in Kabul in 2016-2018, Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Head of Security and Defence Policy, to Consul-General in Mumbai. Before his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he spent a year in the Dutch Army as part of his national service, finishing as Second Lieutenant.
Geoffrey van Leeuwen read law at Leiden University, and international relations at Sciences Po in Paris and Cambridge University, UK.
