Secretary General to Chair High-Level NATO-Ukraine consultations

The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will travel to Sintra, Portugal on 5 October 2006 to chair the fifth Informal High-Level NATO-Ukraine Consultations with participation of Defence Ministers and other senior officials from Ukraine and NATO countries.
The conference is co-organised by NATO and the Portuguese Atlantic Committee. Participants will discuss, inter alia, progress in implementing Ukraine’s defence and security sector reforms and broad approaches to security in the 21 st century. H.E. Mr Lech Walesa, former President of the Republic of Poland and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, will deliver a keynote speech at the meeting.
On the margins of the conference, the Secretary General of NATO will preside over the signing of the Letter of Intent for Nations Expressing their Support for the NATO-Ukraine Partnership Network for Civil Society Expertise Development, to be endorsed by a group of NATO Allies and Ukraine.
The inaugural meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Working Group on Civil and Democratic Control of the Intelligence Sector will also take place in the afternoon on 5 October.
