North Atlantic Council discusses challenges to Energy Security
In a meeting with external experts, the North Atlantic Council today (20 March 2018) discussed global energy developments and their security implications. The International Energy Agency’s Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol, the EU Commission Vice President, Ambassador Maroš Šefčovič, and US State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Diplomacy, Ms. Sandra Oudkirk, discussed major upheavals in the global energy landscape, examined the security implications of the energy transition away from oil, and reviewed the current challenges to energy security in Europe.
These informal Council meetings with energy experts are annual events. They enable NATO to keep abreast of energy developments that could affect Allies’ security, as well as to tap into the expertise of other institutions, such as the EU and the IEA.
