Meet Ambassador Csilla Würtz, who directed NATO summits in Wales and Warsaw

In 2013, Ambassador Csilla Würtz became the first Hungarian and first woman appointed as Secretary of the North Atlantic Council and other Council-level bodies. During her five years at NATO in the senior management, she ensured the smooth functioning of the Alliance’s principal decision-making body and was also in charge of planning and organising NATO summits in Wales in 2014 and Warsaw in 2016 as well as the first meeting of Heads of State and Government in the new NATO Headquarters in 2017. NATO Allies celebrate Alliance’s 75th anniversary year

The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on 4 April 1949 by NATO’s 12 founding members. In the 75 years since, the Alliance has grown to include 32 Allies from Europe and North America. Throughout 2024, NATO Allies celebrated the Alliance’s 75th anniversary – and the anniversaries of their accessions to NATO – by painting murals, playing music, sharing birthday cake and bringing NATO blue to every corner of the Alliance.

Meet Hedwige Lauwaert, who supported NATO’s media relations for more than 25 years

During her long career at NATO, Hedwige Lauwaert served as the principal assistant to four NATO Spokespersons. In this behind-the-scenes role, she helped the Alliance communicate with thousands of international journalists – and witnessed turning points in NATO history, such as the accession of the first countries from the former Eastern Bloc in 1999, NATO’s operation Allied Force conducted in March 1999 to halt the humanitarian catastrophe that was then unfolding in Kosovo, and the invocation of Article 5 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.
