NATO navies hold annual Northern Coasts collective defence exercise in the Baltic Sea Some 30 warships and 3,200 personnel from 15 nations will participate in the annual two-week naval exercise Northern Coasts, which starts on Saturday (9 September 2023) in the Baltic Sea, primarily off the coasts of Estonia and Latvia. Led by the German Navy, Northern Coasts is one of the biggest exercises in the region, and is focusing for the first time on high-end warfare and the collective defence of NATO Allies. |

NATO-Ukraine Council addresses serious security situation in the Black Sea The NATO-Ukraine Council met on Wednesday (26 July 2023) to address the serious security situation in the Black Sea region following Russia’s unilateral termination of the Black Sea Grain Initiative brokered by the United Nations and Türkiye. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg convened the meeting following a request for crisis consultation from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană chaired the Council. |

US demonstrates readiness to reinforce NATO battlegroup in Poland The United States has shown its ability to rapidly deploy reinforcements to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Poland, expanding its capabilities from a battalion to a brigade-level element. This advancement aligns with NATO's new Force Model, designed to strengthen the Alliance's unified response, and is in line with the 2022 NATO Summit's decisions. |

Chair of NATO Military Committee visits Romania to discuss renewed focus on collective defence From 11 to 14 April 2023, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer was in Romania upon the invitation of its Chief of Defence, General Daniel Petrescu. During the visit, Admiral Bauer met with the Defence Minister, Mr Angel Tîlvăr, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Bogdan Aurescu, and Presidential Advisor on National Security, Mr Ion Oprișor. Admiral Bauer visited the NATO Multinational Battlegroup; he was briefed at the Headquarters Multinational Corps South-East, the Multinational Division South-East; and visited troops stationed at the the Joint National Training Centre in Cincu, the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base and the Radio-electronic and Observation Brigade in Constanta. |

He highlighted NATO’s enhanced presence in the region, and the Alliance’s unprecedented support to Ukraine, as well as other partners at risk of Russian aggression, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova. |
