Statement by James Appathurai, the Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia

NATO is deeply concerned by reports of large-scale military hostilities along the line of contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. The sides should immediately cease hostilities, which have already caused civilian casualties. There is no military solution to this conflict. The parties should resume negotiations towards a peaceful resolution. NATO supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.

NATO Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) deepens defence capacity building for partners

A total of 99 personnel, representing 53 defence education institutions and NATO staff from 20 Allied nations and Western European Partner countries participated in the seven-day annual Clearing House meeting under NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP). The online gathering took place on 14-22 September 2020. The meeting helped to identify and meet partner needs, seek to develop synergies and cooperation between DEEP programmes[1], as well as harmonise bilateral efforts.

Major NATO maritime exercise gets underway

NATO launched one of its main maritime exercises on Friday (25 September 2020) with more than 30 ships conducting manoeuvres off the coast of France. Exercise Dynamic Mariner will run until 8 October and will feature surface ships, submarines, maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters from seven NATO countries.

NATO Secretary General meets with Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez at NATO Headquarters

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday (23 September 2020) and commended the Spanish people for their resilience during the COVID-19 crisis. Highlighting that Spain “has not stood alone” during the COVID-19 crisis, he said that NATO’s disaster relief centre coordinated assistance for Spain and that NATO Allies delivered medical supplies, helping to ease the burden on the Spanish healthcare system and save lives.

North Macedonia strengthens its cyber defences

Cyber defence experts in North Macedonia have been training to improve the capacity of their country to respond to cyber threats. Participants from seven government institutions recently completed two courses set up in the framework of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme. The training provided essential insights to facilitate informed decision-making and better communications across fields of expertise, as well as background information useful to understand and adapt to the evolving cyber threat landscape.
