NATO launches challenge for women and girls in science

In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February, the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) is proud to launch a challenge for female university students and early career researchers up to 35 years of age. The Women and Girls in Science 2024 challenge aims to inspire young women to pursue and/or further their careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), to highlight NATO’s support for women in STEM-related disciplines, and to contribute to the diversity and inclusivity of women in this field.

NATO and Japan deepen cooperation on emerging security challenges

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges David van Weel concluded a successful three-day visit to Japan on 15 November 2023. Deepening NATO-Japan cooperation on cyber defence, cutting edge technologies and defence against hybrid threats was at the core of all discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Security Secretariat, the Ministry of Defence, including the Chief of Staff, the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency, as well as with Japan’s scientific community and academia.

In a visit to Copenhagen on Friday (29 September 2023), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for the development of a transatlantic quantum community, harnessing the power of this critical technology for our security. In a joint statement with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the two leaders underscored the importance of closer collaboration among public, private and academic sectors, and the acceleration of responsible innovation.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits Israel

On 27 and 28 September 2023, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer visited Israel upon invitation of the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Hertzl Halevi. In Tel Aviv, Admiral Bauer met with President Yitzhak Herzog. The Chair also received a briefing from senior Israeli defence officials; spoke to the Israeli Defence Force’s Senior Forum; visited the Gaza border crossing; and delivered a speech at the National Security College.

Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits Egypt

From 23 to 25 September 2023, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, visited Egypt upon the invitation of General Mohamed Zaki, Commander-In-Chief Of The Armed Forces, Minister Of Defense And Military Production. In Cairo, Admiral Bauer met with senior political and military authorities and delivered a lecture at the Nasser Higher Military Academy. Building on almost three decades of cooperation through the Mediterranean Dialogue, the visit provided an important opportunity to look in depth at the military cooperation between NATO and Egypt.

Nomination of new IBAN Board Member, Mr Sébastien Lepers

Sébastien Lepers, born in 1973 in Nouméa, New Caledonia (France), was appointed by the North Atlantic Council to the NATO International Board of Auditors (IBAN) as a Board Member for four years from 1 August 2023.
