Ukrainian NGO ‘Arm Women Now’ exhibit on display at NATO HQ

A Ukrainian NGO – “Arm Women Now” – is pioneering the manufacturing of female-specific uniforms, body armour and other non-lethal equipment. An exhibit showcasing its work and the importance of military adaptation to gender specifics is on display at NATO Headquarters. Ensuring that servicewomen can operate in the safest possible conditions includes providing them with equipment and uniforms tailored to their needs. Russia’s war against Ukraine has brought increased attention to the risk posed to combat effectiveness and the lives of women from inadequate military equipment.

The 48th Annual Conference for the NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives focused on “Military Planning and Partnerships: A New Era of Gender Perspective at NATO”

From 6 to 8 May 2024, over 300 participants across 47 Allied and Partner Nations attended the 48th Annual Conference for the NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives (NCGP) online and in-person at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. This year’s theme was “Military Planning and Partnerships: A New Era of Gender Perspective at NATO”.

Gender and Resilience Wargame hosted at NATO HQ

On 28 Mar 2024, a project team from the NATO-Wide Executive Development Programme (NEDP), sponsored by the IMS Office of the Gender Advisor, conducted a wargame on the link between the Gender Perspective and resilience. The wargame challenged participants to apply a whole-of-society approach to resilience in order to gain a greater understanding of the intricacies of conflict dynamics and enhance perseverance in abstract terms. Participants included experts across the Alliance from NATO HQ, ACO and ACT in resilience, gender and other areas of the Alliance to allow for a well-rounded approach.

Deep Dive Recap: The High North and the Gender Perspective

On 21 February 2024, the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) Office of the Gender Advisor convened its final Deep Dive session of the regional series, discussing the High North and the Gender Perspective. It focused on the complex intersection of gender and regional security threats, including hybrid attacks. It also discussed the intersection of gender with other marginalised identity markers, as well as categories for gender analysis in preparing for, preventing and responding to security threats in the High North.

A soldier of the French Army, Lieutenant Colonel Lauranne now works as the gender advisor for Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, helping commanders and staff integrate gender perspective into all of the NATO command’s work strands and projects. First all-female aircrew completes NATO AWACS mission

For the first time ever, a NATO AWACS mission sortie has been completed with an all-female aircrew. The flight, part of the Alliance’s enhanced vigilance activities, took place on Friday (9 February 2024), and was conducted by twenty-two servicewomen from 8 NATO Allies: Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal and the US.

On 17 January 2024, the NATO International Military Staff (IMS) Office of the Gender Advisor convened its fourth regional Deep Dive session, which discussed the Balkans and the Gender Perspective. It focused on the Balkan countries’ progress implementing the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, as well as ongoing challenges. It also explored the significant advancements in regional WPS cooperation, and NATO KFOR mission’s efforts to advance the gender perspective.
