Chair of the NATO Military Committee visits Switzerland

From 4 to 5 December 2023, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Bauer was in Switzerland for an official visit at the invitation of its Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Thomas Süssli. The Chair also met with Federal Councillor Viola Amherd, Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS), and delivered a keynote address to senior military and civilian staff. The programme concluded with a visit of the Spiez Laboratory.

In a historic first, Swiss defence minister joins meeting of NATO's North Atlantic Council

Viola Amherd, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, visited NATO Headquarters on Wednesday (22 March 2023) for talks with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and to meet with NATO ambassadors. Her participation in the North Atlantic Council was the first-ever by a Swiss defence minister.

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visits Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach visited Switzerland on 13 and14 October 2020. During the visit, he met with the Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Thomas Süssli, toured the Spiez laboratory, the Swiss Federal Institute for NBC-Protection, and the Air Force Operations Centre in Dübendorf. Air Chief Marshal Peach also met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, H.E. Ambassador Peter Maurer.

Switzerland: a key partner on defence reform

NATO and Switzerland have developed a strong partnership over the years since the country joined the Partnership for Peace in 1996. The Swiss armed forces are making a valuable contribution to the NATO-led force in Kosovo. Switzerland has also distinguished itself in terms of its significant contribution to promoting work with partners in the area of defence reform, education and training. The NATO Secretary General exchanged views with key members of the Swiss government on how to deepen partnership, during his visit to Switzerland on 22 November.

Switzerland presented the Russian language version of the publication "Building Integrity and Reducing Corruption in Defence: A Compendium of Best Practices" at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, on 17 November.
