This makes the job of SACEUR one of the most challenging – and most important – military positions in the world,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today (3 May 2019), during the change of command ceremony for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), in Mons (Belgium).

NATO Secretary General welcomes new Supreme Allied Commander Europe

United States Army General Curtis M. Scaparrotti took over command of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) from General Philip M. Breedlove during a handover ceremony in Mons, Belgium on Wednesday (4 May 2016). Attending the ceremony, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked General Breedlove for his outstanding contribution to transatlantic security and welcomed General Scaparrotti to the Alliance. “Today we have come to honour two great men, General Breedlove and General Scaparrotti. Men who personify the enduring bond between Europe and the United States,” said Mr. Stoltenberg.

United States Air Force General Philip Mark Breedlove took over command of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) from Admiral James Stavridis during a handover ceremony in Mons, Belgium on Monday ( 13 May 2013). "I am honoured to be here today for this handover ceremony to thank Admiral Stavridis for his outstanding contribution to transatlantic security and to welcome our new Supreme Allied Commander, General Breedlove, to the Alliance," said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who attended the ceremony.

Craddock, United States Army from his responsibilities as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and to appoint Admiral James G. Stavridis, United States Navy to succeed General Craddock as Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.
