NATO Secretary General meets European leaders at EU Council in Brussels

Arriving at the European Council on Thursday (28 June 2018) the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he will be discussing NATO-EU cooperation with European leaders. He highlighted that NATO-EU cooperation is making a lot of progress and that both organisations are working together on migration, tackling the root causes and helping to stabilise the neighbourhood, including by training local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Albanian patrol boat concludes navy’s first NATO tour

The Albanian Navy’s ALS ORIKU patrol boat on Wednesday (22 November 2017) wrapped up a full year of operations with NATO’s Standing Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2), marking a major milestone in the Albanian Navy’s first ever NATO deployment. Joining NATO’s Aegean mission in November 2016, the ALS ORIKU monitored and patrolled the waters between Turkey and Greece, supporting international efforts aimed at curbing human trafficking.

NATO and EU discuss future cooperation at sea

Policy experts, diplomats and military representatives met on Friday (30 June 2017) to discuss maritime cooperation between NATO and the European Union. The meeting, hosted at Norway House in Brussels, was designed to draw lessons for future cooperation at sea, building on NATO-EU experience in countering piracy in the Indian Ocean and working side-by-side in the Mediterranean. Participants discussed all aspects of maritime cooperation: from planning through execution and post-crisis management, as well as legal considerations and the contributions of industry.

Secretary General: NATO-EU cooperation essential in a challenging world

Visiting the European Commission on Thursday (10 March 2016), Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed the vital importance of the relationship between NATO and the European Union. After meeting Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Mr. Stoltenberg welcomed the organisations’ deepening ties, saying, “that is something we need more than ever, because we face a more challenging security environment.”

Standing NATO Maritime Group Two expands area of activities

AEGEAN SEA - The German flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) FGS BONN is the first NATO ship to enter the area of activity for a first patrol around the Greek island of Lesbos. Over the weekend, NATO had expanded the area of activity into the territorial waters of Turkey and Greece, in close coordination with both Allies. NATO also expanded its cooperation with the EU’s border agency Frontex.

NATO Secretary General discusses instability on NATO’s southern borders with Turkish Prime Minister

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu met on Monday (7 March 2016) to discuss the conflict and instability on NATO’s southern borders. NATO Secretary General welcomes expansion of NATO deployment in the Aegean Sea

NATO took swift decisions to deploy ships to the Aegean Sea to support our Allies Greece and Turkey, as well as the EU's border agency FRONTEX, in their efforts to tackle the migrant and refugee crisis. NATO ships are already collecting information and conducting monitoring in the Aegean Sea. Their activity will now be expanded to take place also in territorial waters.

Standing NATO Maritime Group Two conducts drills in the Aegean Sea

Aegean Sea - Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) is patrolling in the Aegean Sea in the area between Greece and Turkey. SNMG2 arrived in the Aegean Sea to participate in national and international efforts to cut the lines of illegal trafficking and illegal migration in the Aegean Sea, as mandated by the North Atlantic Council.
