Looking back and moving forward: Marking 20 Years of NATO - Istanbul Cooperation Initiative partnership

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for stronger, more strategic and results-orientated partnerships with countries in the Gulf region during an event in the margins of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday (25 September 2024). Hosted by the Crown Prince of Kuwait, his Highness Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah, the event celebrated 20 years of NATO-Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI). It brought together NATO’s four ICI partners (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates) as well as Saudi Arabia, Oman and the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

NATO Secretary General announces the appointment of new Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood

On Tuesday, (23 July 2024), Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the appointment of a Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina. He is the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy and has served as the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Allied Foreign Ministers discuss report by Group of Experts on NATO’s southern neighbourhood

Meeting in Brussels on 4 and 5 April, Foreign Ministers discussed the findings of the review conducted by an independent Group of Experts on NATO’s approach on its southern neighbourhood. The review highlights the linkage between the security of NATO’s southern neighbourhoods – North Africa, the Middle East, the Sahel region and adjacent regions – and that of NATO Allies. It also underscores that deep-rooted localized challenges are now exacerbated by global strategic competition and threat-multipliers, such as climate change.

Secretary General receives final report from group of experts on NATO’s southern neighbourhood

On Wednesday (20 March 2024), the independent group of experts appointed to support NATO’s reflection on its southern neighbourhood presented their final report to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The group also engaged with the North Atlantic Council and briefed Permanent Representatives on their key findings. The report proposes concrete recommendations to shape NATO’s approach to its southern neighbourhood – particularly the Middle East, North Africa and Sahel regions.
