Statement by NATO Secretary General on tragic explosion in Albania
I am deeply saddened at the news of the series of explosions at the military facility near Tirana, which has led to loss of life and a very high number of injured. On behalf of NATO, I express my condolences and sympathies to the Government and people of Albania in this difficult period.

NATO Allies sign Accession Protocols for Albania and Croatia
Allies signed today the Accession Protocols with Albania and Croatia, opening the way for the full NATO membership of these two countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, H.E. Mr. Luzlim Basha and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Gordan Jandrocović participated in the ceremony in the NATO Headquarters.

NATO Secretary General welcomes Albania and Croatia as NATO members
Today, Albania and Croatia have completed the accession process, and have joined the Alliance as members. I warmly congratulate them on this historic achievement. In becoming NATO members, Albania and Croatia share the benefits and responsibilities of collective security.

Second NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund project in Albania completed successfully
The second NATO/PfP Trust Fund project in Albania which was launched in December 2002 has come to an end. A ceremony was held to mark its successful completion in Tirana on 4 October 2007.

NATO Secretary General visits Western Balkans
The Secretary General visited the Western Balkans on 7 and 8 May. He first travelled to Croatia and Slovenia, before making its way to Albania and the the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹ on 8 May.

NATO supports Albania’s efforts to implement reforms
The Prime Minister of Albania Sali Berisha visited the NATO Headquarters and met with the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council in order to discuss Albania’s progress report within the Membership Action Plan.
