General Knud Bartels visited Albania from 5-6 February 2014, with the aim of discussing the country's defence reforms and strengthening military-to-military cooperation. Exchanging views with Albania's Prime Minister, Defence Minister and Chief of Defence, General Bartels acknowledged the country's strong commitment to collective defence and NATO-led operations. He is the first Chairman of the NATO Military Committee to visit Albania since it became a member of the Alliance in 2009.

The Secretary General visited the Western Balkans on 7 and 8 May. He first travelled to Croatia and Slovenia, before making its way to Albania and the the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹ on 8 May.

On 7 April a ceremony was held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to mark the accession of Albania and Croatia to the Alliance. The two countries’ flags were raised in the presence of Prime Minister Sali Berisha of Albania and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader of Croatia.

Today, Albania and Croatia have completed the accession process, and have joined the Alliance as members. I warmly congratulate them on this historic achievement. In becoming NATO members, Albania and Croatia share the benefits and responsibilities of collective security.

The Republics of Albania and Croatia are expected to accede into NATO during the Strasbourg/Kehl Summit early April. Their accession and upcoming integration phases are long-term efforts that require focused and tailored military support from across the NATO command and force structures.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Mr. Lulzim Basha, visited the NATO Headquarters on Tuesday, 25 November 2008 and met with the NATO Secretary General.

Allies signed today the Accession Protocols with Albania and Croatia, opening the way for the full NATO membership of these two countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, H.E. Mr. Luzlim Basha and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Gordan Jandrocović participated in the ceremony in the NATO Headquarters.

The two countries have now formally begun accession talks to join the Alliance, as they were invited to during the Bucharest Summit earlier this month. This is the first of five main steps on the road to full NATO membership.

I am deeply saddened at the news of the series of explosions at the military facility near Tirana, which has led to loss of life and a very high number of injured. On behalf of NATO, I express my condolences and sympathies to the Government and people of Albania in this difficult period.
