On behalf of NATO, please accept my best wishes for the success of the AMANI AFRICA II exercise. The exercise is yet another milestone for the African Union as it develops its capabilities to help meet the many complex challenges on the African continent.

NATO and the African Union (AU) took a further step in advancing their cooperation, by signing on 8 May 2014 an agreement which formalizes the status of the NATO liaison office to the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa. The completion of this technical agreement will facilitate greater cooperation between the two organizations in areas of mutual interest such as: strategic air and sea lift, interoperability of multinational forces, individual training, exercise planning, and lessons learned from operations. How to share experiences in implementing United Nations initiatives such as Women, Peace and Security, and Children and Armed Conflict, will also be examined.

Under the NATO banner, the United States airlifted 1 700 troops from Uganda into Mogadishu and re-deployed 850 Ugandan troops out of Mogadishu that are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The airlift, which commenced on 5 March 2010, was completed on 16 March 2010. Upon the request of the African Union for strategic airlift support for its mission in Somalia, NATO began providing this support in June 2007.

On 18 and 19 February, a group of high level officials from the African Union (AU) - led by Mr. Sivuyile Thandikhaya Bam, Head of the Peace Support Operations Division of the African Union - visited NATO’s Headquarters and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium. The event was organized by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Outreach Programme.

On Friday 24 April, NATO decided to continue the counter piracy activities of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) in the Gulf of Aden and in waters off the Horn of Africa after a short port visit to Karachi (Pakistan) from 26 to 27 April.
